PROGRAM DETAILS

WHAT IS YOUTH OPEN STUDIOS?

ArtSpan's Youth Open Studios program activates youth artists to plan, promote, and host their own public art exhibition as part of the citywide SF Open Studios event each fall. ArtSpan provides a curriculum outline for coaching students to prepare for their exhibitions and to present themselves as professional artists. Youth groups may incorporate performance (music, dance, spoken word, etc.) in addition to visual art exhibitions.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR YOUTH?

The Youth Open Studios program provides a framework for students to learn through experience by representing themselves as legitimate artists as they work toward an exhibition deadline. Students gain public speaking skills, lessons in planning and time management, and a chance to showcase youth creativity to a vast audience of art appreciators. They will learn to promote and host their own exhibition and present their own artwork to their communities as professional artists.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Youth groups that are part of public or private art classes or afterschool programs are eligible to participate in YOS. ArtSpan provides guidelines and promotes the exhibitions planned and hosted by the schools and youth organizations. Strong support and supervision from the group organizer (teacher, youth group leader, parents, etc.) is required. In order to register a group, there must be 5 or more youth artists committed to participation.

HOW DO YOUTH ARTISTS  GET INVOLVED?

Program registration is FREE! Adult supervisors must get a commitment from at least 5 youth artists, and complete the YOS Registration Agreement by June 28, 2019.

PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • YOS Coaching Outline (for teachers / group leaders)
  • Youth Open Studios Exhibition: One Saturday (during SFOS event) 1pm-4pm
  • Promotion from ArtSpan, with featured article in the SF Open Studios Guide Magazine
  • Youth Open Studios posters, postcards and digital flyers listing all participants
  • A promotional listing in ArtSpan's SF Open Studios event newsletter and social media
  • One piece of artwork displayed at the SFOS Exhibition at SOMArts (October 12 – November 3)
